We have a new travel blog!

The Molbys Go East

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Having ignored the world of xanga for a few months now, I figure it's about time to let the hyperreal void know what's been going on.

First, in the world of Apple (my employment), I have been upgraded to full time (hooray for health insurance) and am working on becoming a creative (the guys who teach all the classes).

Second, about a week and a half ago, I returned from a jaunt to Ireland and the UK (pictures below).

The view down the Liffey

Christ Church Cathedral at night

Where we went for morning Eucharist

My favorite part of going to an Anglican service is reciting the creed, and knowing that my church family back in Ohio, and all over, are saying the same thing.

After the service, we were invited for tea and coffee in the crypt

It's a rather well-kept crypt

The national drink of choice. If you've ever tried it in the states, it's much better in Dublin

The next day we went and toured the Guinness Storehouse museum.

There, they have the original 9,000 year lease encased in the floor

signed by Arthur Guinness

If you go expecting to tour a brewery, you'll be dissappointed, but for a museum, it's pretty cool.

The view from the top, where they give you your pint of Guinness

That was the end of day two in Dublin, which is about all there is to do there. So we booked it out of town and into the country, where we saw this cool neolithic burial side called Newgrange.

At dawn on the winter solstice, the sun shines through the window above the door,

shining light across the floor of the tomb.

(Wikipedia's take on it)

About a mile away, was another burial mound called Dowth. This one has yet to be excavated.

But about 50 yards away is this really cool ruined medieval church-turned cemetary.

Us :)

So, that's about it for Ireland. I'll post some pictures from England tomorrow.

SNOW!

About a week ago, we had our first big snow of the year. I woke up to this out my window.

So I let the dog out and played in the yard with her for a while.

Then my sister and I made a snowman.

The light pole is actually going through him.

I love how pretty the snow makes everything look.

So, it's Christmas time, and I'm excited because I finally get to spend the Christmas season all in one place. It has seriously been since high school that I didn't have to travel right before Christmas. I don't know why, but that somehow feels important to me. The best news is that Brandi comes home in just over a week. She thinks we idealize Christmas at our house. Maybe so, but I think it's worth it.

Tomorrow is a day off, so I'm trying out a recipe for the Fifth Annual Molby Family Christmas Cookie Contest. It's time to take back the title! It'll be training day (think Rocky III).

Congratulations to Laura and Clint, and Grant and Sue. Welcome to the club.

Last England Post

So, I realized that I have not posted for a little while now, at least nothing of substance. I have been keeping busy; never stressed, but never bored. I recently finished a remix of an NPR segment by Andrei Codrescu, a prof at Louisiana State University. If you want to download the song, right click (ctrl click) here and save the linked file. For the original audio file, click here. I have also just finished my new Matt Chases People video web site.

I have recently become quite fed up with the People of England and their inability to walk with other people on the sidewalk at the same time. They will be walking toward you, see you plain as day as you move to the left, and somehow not have the sense to move to their left to avoid colliding. They will in all probability move to their right and walk right into you. At first I thought it was just a few clumsy people, but it happens so frequently that I am forced to fault the entire country.

Anyway, I am going to be returning to the States rather soon (but not because of the walking thing). The job situation over here is basically hopeless. Where 5 or 10 years ago I would have been able to get a cash-paying job at most any pub, the country has cracked down on immigration so hard recently that no one can hire you without the right paperwork (which I am unable to get until Brandi and I are married). Being back in Chicago will be fun, I've missed my family and friends, but it will be a major bummer being so far from Brandi. So, for those of you who placed a wager, I'm turning in my chips.
